Quadbase Systems Releases EspressReport® v5.0

Major enhancements provide a streamlined report design experience, new data source options, & virtual memory processing for very large reports.

Santa Clara, CA -- July 29, 2005 -- Quadbase Systems, a leading supplier of Java™-based information delivery and presentation solutions, today announced the availability of EspressReport® 5.0.  The first major release in over a year provides extensive enhancements and improvements to the powerful Java reporting engine as well as many new reporting features.

EspressReport is a sophisticated reporting solution from Quadbase Systems.  Written in pure Java it allows users to develop and deploy professional-looking reports across virtually any platform.  With the robust API, users can easily integrate reporting into servlets, JSPs, and applications to deliver Web and print ready content on the fly.  The template-based reporting system extends report design capabilities to end users with the powerful, easy to use Report Designer UI.  With its flexible design and extensive features, EspressReport can handle virtually any reporting requirement from the simple output of application data to detailed presentations of corporate information.  EspressReport can generate reports in HTML/DHTML, text, CSV, XML, Rich Text, PDF, and Excel formats.

Report Designer Enhancements
Many features have been added to v5.0 that simplify the report design process.  EspressReport now allows users to create custom report styles.  These styles can be applied to new reports directly in the wizard, making it easy to carry a common look and feel across multiple reports.  In addition, the Report Designer interface has been improved, making it easy to move and re-size report elements - even across different sections.  A report explorer tool has been added that allows users to view all the report elements in a tree form.  This new interface allows users to easily find and select specific elements.  New design features allow users to add a table of contents to any report.  The TOC generates links to specific groups of data, or user-defined bookmarks.

New Data Source Options
Version 5.0 allows users to connect to relational databases using a JNDI lookup name.  Instead of a traditional JDBC URL, reports using a JNDI lookup can be seamlessly deployed in multiple environments without any configuration or custom code to specify database connections.  In addition, EspressReport now supports XML query parameters.  This feature not only enables more dynamic XML reporting, but also allows users to employ parameter-based features like drill-down and sub-report linking for XML data.

New Drill-Down Features
New features allow users to add drill-down to sub-reports.  Now reports built using multiple tables can have actionable content for each table.  In addition, EspressReport now supports crosstab drill-down which allows users to drill on individual points in a pivot table.

Memory Management
Powerful new features allow users to control the amount of memory used by EspressReport in deployment environments.  Very large reports now run efficiently in a virtual memory system when the amount of data exceeds a pre-set threshold.  This feature works for any report and any data source allowing users to pre-empt any memory utilization issues.
